#Introduction
Acupuncture is an ancient practice that dates back thousands of years. It was developed through rational thinking and careful observations, without relying on superstitions. The Yellow Emperor’s Inner Canon, compiled around 475-222 BC and listed on the UNESCO World Heritage, contains detailed information on acupuncture methods, points, and treatment indications. Acupuncture, along with other physical therapies like moxibustion and negative cupping, is a mainstream practice in Eastern medicine. It focuses on maintaining wellness and restoring balance, even before severe diseases occur.
How Acupuncture Heals:
Acupuncture works in three ways: locally, segmentally, and generally.
Local Effect: Needling at a specific point reduces pain and promotes relaxation in the area. It also improves blood circulation and aids in muscle and tissue recovery.
Segmental Effect: Needling a point that shares a spinal nerve can relieve symptoms in another part of the body connected to that nerve. For example, needling the back can alleviate stomach cramps.
General Effect: Acupuncture affects the brain, stimulating the secretion of hormones and neuropeptides. This helps alter dysfunctional brain responses, reducing pain sensitivity, anxiety, and insomnia. Acupuncture can also regulate the autonomic nervous system and has anti-inflammatory effects.
Illnesses Treated with Acupuncture:
Acupuncture is recommended for various conditions, including headaches, backaches, shoulder pain, neck pain, knee pain, mood disorders, gastrointestinal problems, sleep disorders, and morning sickness during pregnancy. It has also shown promise in treating opioid abuse and cancer-related pain.
Beauty Acupuncture:
Beauty acupuncture, discovered accidentally while treating facial paralysis, offers esthetic effects like clear skin, reduced swelling, relaxed facial muscles, and a facelift. It has no reported adverse effects and can even relieve headaches, insomnia, temporomandibular joint issues, and dry eyes.
Is Acupuncture Painful?
The level of pain experienced during acupuncture varies from person to person. Sometimes it may not be painful at all, while other times it could cause discomfort. Painful needling is sometimes necessary for treatment, but gentle needling can be used in other cases. Acupuncture needles come in different thicknesses and lengths, allowing the Korean Medicine Doctor (KMD) to choose the appropriate needle for each patient.
Finding a Good Korean Medicine Doctor:
Becoming a KMD requires enrolling in a traditional Korean medicine college with a six-year curriculum. These colleges admit only top academic candidates, ensuring high-quality education and training. Reputable Korean medicine clinics are unlikely to have fraudulent doctors. A good KMD will ask relevant questions, carefully examine the patient’s overall health, and respond sincerely and trustworthily to inquiries.
